Photo: laptopmag.com I came across this issue few week backs while delivering my class. Usually, my laptop is connected to a projector through a USB-C hub and a mouse when I am in my class. One day, I realized the 'I' key wasn't working properly. I could type 'i' only if I hit the key a little harder. I assumed it was due to the projector being connected or the mouse of the USB driver not connecting properly. When I'm working at home, the laptop is connected to a LCD Monitor via USB-C hub, a mouse and an external keyboard. I didn't realize the issue at home because I am pretty much using my external keyboard. Two days back, I was typing without the external keyboard and faced the 'I' key not working issue. This time, it seemed permanent. Applying more force to the key didn't work either. I cleaned the keyboard slots with a brush too. Didn't work. So I took onto Google to see if there could be any solutions though I had assumed it was a hardware failure and will have to replace the keyboard itself. One of my previous colleagues had the same model of Dell and came across similar problem. I thought this was a model specific thing. I was pretty much sure that I was doomed. Nevertheless, I wanted to take a chance at googling. Read two pages in the official Dell support community. https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-13-certain-keys-not-working-on-the-keyboard/td-p/6076059 This solution posted by AdrianG001 in the second page worked for me. Phewww!!! SAVEDDDDDDD..... |
1. I restarted the computer.
2. I kept on pressing Fn key on reboot till it started some diagnostic thingy.
3. Restarted the computer again. Kept pressing F2 key until another diagnostic thingy started.
4. When it completed, I just EXIT.
5. There was no ' 'Load default setup config' as mentioned in the solution above. However, when I restarted the laptop, the key was working fine.
I hope this works for you as well. :)
UPDATE: The key stopped working AGAIN. Worked again when I repeated the same whole process. Ugh! Next morning, didn't work again. Shyat!
