"There are 200 million people on Facebook that list themselves as single, so clearly there's something to do here," Zuckerberg said.
So, Facebook is launching an app called Dating. Well, it's not necessarily a standalone app, but an added feature to the Facebook.
AT F8, FACEBOOK’S annual developer conference, Mark Zuckerberg announced a new dating service, simply called "Dating," that will exist right within the social network's own app. It will allow Facebook users to create separate profiles from their main Facebook accounts to pursue romantic connections. The two profiles won’t interact, meaning your Facebook friends won’t be able to see what your Dating profile says. - Wired
In a country like ours (Nepal), the match making apps and sites like Tinder haven't lifted up that good. The reason might be that the country is small with a small market. Only Kathmandu, the capital, being the one with tech savvy population, people in other parts seldom use other apps and sites.
Another reason could be the skepticism about security. The country where, people are still skeptic about doing online monetary transactions, an "online talk and meet" culture is sure to not work.
However, Facebook, on the other hand is popular not only in Kathmandu. People in the rural areas with access to the Internet through SIM Data are regular users. So, this could mean the dating feature could get a market in Nepal as well.
Now, what does this mean to us, for a less open minded society like ours - where sisters and daughters still need to take permission (or lie) from the parents to meet their GUY friends, where girls are still hesitant to take genuine compliments from a guy ?
On another note-
The power of Facebook is damn huge. The fact that the value of the biggest online dating app in US, Match, was down by 22.09%, just by this announcement, marks the power of Facebook.
What I love about Facebook is that it has created such huge base of data for itself (for good or worse), it can enter a wide domain of market. I wouldn't be surprised, if one day, Facebook enters the Education field because in a (future) research, it will show up that students use Facebook to do collaborative studies and assignments.
