#Apabad-Nepali movie- review through my story
June 19,2012
[I am neither a writer nor a critic, I just write when I feel to. So, sorry for the stupid lines or immature writings :D ]

Had been hearing much about the movie ‘ Apabad ‘, but wasn’t sure if I would go to watch the movie as it didn’t interest me that deep. I was impressed with the movie poster though, which I am always interested in before the movie’s material. You don’t get to see much of nice posters in nepali movie , you know.

So, today we had classes off, our two ‘khatra’ teachers were absent, one for his paper presentation in China, another for his interview in NTV on Natural Language Processing (NLP)’s status in Nepal. Such KHATRA teachers right, we are lucky to have them [  :p ] . Thus, some of us made plans to watch the movie and I agreed. The show was at 2: 30, but the irony here is that none was sure of the plan till 12:30, when Aaron called me and I asked him and Dawadi to come over and join us. I asked everyone in my hostel if they are going or not, and everyone agreed. So when the two arrived and I asked everyone to get ready, they said they won’t go. Seriously? Now that’s a nice back out. I didn’t want to back out, so out of five of us involved in the plan, only I joined the two.

Dawadi said , “ jamma 3 jana, thikai bho, dherai bhako bhaye road cross garauna garho hunthyo sablai :p “.

After 28 km of bus travel, we reached Barahi Movies, and being Tuesday, the middle of the week, we couldn’t see any crowd. Even if there was a crowd, it wouldn’t be of those going to watch Apabad. The crowd is always of those who come to see stupid jumpy or disgusting exposing movies.
We took the ticket. Out of almost 50 people over there waiting for the gate to open, it seemed like only 3 of us came for Apabad. Well, yes it is possible to distinguish that, you know what I mean. After waiting for about half an hour, we got to enter the hall. To my surprise, there were so many people, it was a houseful. FOOLED? Haha, sure there were only a dozen of people. And later a dozen added. So almost 25 people were there. YES, I COUNTED :D .

Unlike any typical Nepali movie, Apabad opens up good. You don’t get to see such starting often in Nepali movies. I don’t mean in the context of the story but in the sense of LOOK. You know typical Nepali movies start with ‘ tudum tudum dhusss’ sound, RGB , flashy colors and all. But Apabad doesn’t, it’s quite good, I must say.

I should mention this. The movie clearly states that it has been inspired from ‘ Into the wild, Cast away and Real stories ‘.  So it doesn’t give you a chance to complain ‘ purai choreko thiyo yar!’. I haven’t watched any of the two movies, so it would be a new story for me, and could judge Apabad on its own.

Apabad : Nepali word for Exception

The plot of the movie revolves around Suyog, the lead actor of the movie, who seems to be an exception to the society, ‘that’ society which believes one is successful only when he/she a doctor, engineer, a manager in a big company, moreover A RICH ONE. If someone tries to live his/her dream regardless of what the result may be, he/she becomes an exception to this society. This is what the movie is trying to depict.

The story is an inspired one, so I wouldn’t comment. The works on cinematography and camera is pretty good. Music is good, songs and the lyrics do fine. There is an unnecessary song (with video), though the song is good. It would have been better if the song was rather played just in the background.
I liked the flow of the story, the way it has been presented with monologues, flashback and the present situation the character has been through. It would be my bad to talk about whole of the story. What I can say is the society doesn’t accept his dreams and makes him believe he is an exception. So he decides to just go away.

I don’t know if you will like the movie and story or not, I can’t assure you that. This is because everyone has a different taste of movie. This, being a slow and thematic movie, unlike LOOT, may not interest you.

But if you love STORY movies, this can be worth watching for you.
One more thing, almost, I repeat ALMOST every youth, raised in a middle-class family, is going to relate this story to his life. The ones who have been raised with a daily dose of ‘ padha babu/nani, doctor bannu parchha. Hami aama babule etro dukha garera padhako timilai, timi ramrari padhera doctor bannu parcha’  are going to feel for the movie. You might see yourself in Suyog’s character.

Pros:
·         A different Nepali movie, might serve as a milestone for THEMATIC movies in Nepal.
·         Has a good story, though inspired
·         Good works on cinematography and camera

Cons:
·         “BAD ENDING”

  • ·        Unnecessary scenes , some being vulgar
  • ·        Unnecessary video songs
  • ·        Immature acting in some places
  • ·        Bad choice of side actors ( you will realize what I mean once you see the movie
  • ·     Bad understanding of how the scenes would appear if it were natural

The movie has flaws, isn’t perfect. But the main thing is that Nepali movies are changing, though slowly.  And if we don’t compromise on the flaws, such movies will be discouraged. So it is our duty to encourage them by watching, atleast once. If we don’t watch, they don’t earn. If they don’t earn they will be discouraged and be back to those stupid movies again, which we don’t want.

I would recommend you all to watch the movie. If you are a lover of international movies, you better keep your movie knowledge at home and go because you are sure to hate the movie since Apabad isn’t to that standard yet. If you have watched Cast Away already, I would suggest you to forget that movie and watch Apabad.

Timi Uta Ma Yeta (Sunsaan Raat Ma) Guitar Chords - Pratik Gurung Cover - Original by Milan Newar, Rajan Raj Shiwakoti

I came across this song when Kanden Limbu sang this in Nepal Idol.  He was one of the contestants. I thought it was his original. Surprisingly, it is not. His was based on Pratik Gurung's cover. This is actually a full fledge song with a music video. Here's the original one. However, I like the cover version. Here are the chords for a portion of the song. The chords are based on this tutorial . In the tutorial, plucking is used. You can strum as well if that's what you prefer.  CAPO: 2nd fret STRUMMING: D-DU Plucking used: 5-2-3 (C and Am), 4-2-3 (FT and GT), 6-2-3 (G) Chords: C, Am, G Major, F Major Triad (FT), G Major Triad (GT) NOTE: It's easier if you play G Major in C's original position; just move 2 and 3 fingers one step up.   C                             Am (Sunsan raat ma yo mero aatma FT               GT    C Chasakka bijheko mayalu C                             Am Timlai nai samjhi ma ruda ruda FT       GT   C Sirani bhijheko ) x 2 C
