Creature Poverty

Creature Poverty

Good people are good to their animals.

Animal rights, genetically modified foods, and many other issues cycle through the news more and more lately. Everything happens for a reason. The ability for mankind to work with plants or animals by way of cloning, modifying, taming, eating, abusing, dressing in cute clothing and/or carrying in personal luggage, all comes from the beliefs and values we place on these creatures. Like most issues, there are extreme points that people can take.

  • Plants and/or animals are meaningless objects that can be treated as such
  • Plants and/or animals are more important than humans and should be treated as such

We all fall somewhere in this spectrum of beliefs. Remember, our beliefs come from what we've experienced and been taught about the world. This understanding will help us find a way to live a rich life in regards to our views on creatures. While all life on the earth is amazing and worthy of admiration, there is one that from that truly stands above the rest. Human beings possess unique abilities to create and destroy, love and hate, unite and scatter and most importantly live by more than instinct or design. Free will and the ability to choose how we live sets us apart from all other creatures on the earth. This being the case, we are the only ones on the earth that can determine the state of the world. Plants and animals will always act according to their design and instinct. They are the constant and we are the variable in the equation of life.

The principle of good people are good to their animals speaks to the responsibility we have to take care of all forms of life on the earth. If we want to live in a good world, then we have to accept the fact that humans are the sole caretakers of the world. This doesn't imply that plants and animals are greater simply because we must care for them. No advancement in science or technology will be able to replicate the unique qualities of a human being a plant, animal, or machine.

We must maintain a healthy tension of caring for the creatures of the world while recognizing that humanity is the crowning achievement of all creation. A world without plants and animals in their natural glory is a poor one. A world where humans are stifled for the sake of a plant or animal is equally poor.

Benefits of a world rich in creatures

  • Plants in the home or office have been scientifically proven to increase productivity and reduce stress.
  • Plants reduce biological and man-made pollutants and provide cleaner air.
  • Variety in our diets is key to a body rich in the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy life. Plants are rich in various vitamins and minerals our bodies need to function at their optimum level.
  • Species of animals and insects are needed to balance one another. The loss of a species or the excess of another will lead to imbalance of others.
