The Second Time

– Vice Principal Krishna Dhungana
of Terse HSS, Sindhupalchowk told a gathering of about 50 teachers at a ‘Teacher Training’ this Saturday.
This was the
second time I was mentioned for doing the Practical Projects for the Practical
marks fulfillment, that accounted for 25 marks.
The first
time, Krishna Sir had mentioned my name for the same reason at our School’s teacher meeting. The first time, I was startled, but
wasn’t feeling ‘WHOA’, I don’t know why. That night Eva (my TFN co-fellow at the school) asked me if I felt ‘WHOA’ at the meeting. I said, ‘NO’. Seriously, I hadn’t felt anything as such. I was like ‘It isn’t a very big deal’.
Doing
practical projects was something I just felt I need to do as I was always
interested in making and creating things. So, Science projects were more of a personal thing that made
me happy rather than which came out of me as a TFN fellow. This may be the reason I had not much
of a reaction the first time. But the second time, about 50 teachers were present along
with the Resource person of our area. Being mentioned among such huge mass made me feel it was
actually a BIG DEAL.
I started
reflecting. There had never been such Science activity for marks before. It was the first time in decades. Ok, it was a big deal. There was no system of taking
practical exams for fulfillment of 25 marks allocated for the ACTUAL practical
thing. The school
initiated the Practical exam system and designated a whole one day for taking
practical. Now I realize, a whole system was changed. For few more days after the second
term exam finished, I could see teachers taking practical exams of English,
Nepali and Health. I saw students preparing for their practical exams.
One of the
teachers was taking practical exam of Health and Physical Education by letting
students play volleyball. Though the teacher didn’t care much of how the students were playing, if the students
knew the basics and techniques of volleyball, the students were having fun and
I was excited for the students. They got to PLAY FOR THE EXAM MARKS. Play volleyball and get marks. Could there be anything better than
this?
There's this subject about occupation and profession - OBT, that I absolutely love but the students never got to experience what it's like to live a profession. Students now are experiencing. Seeing them make 'dhaki' using wrappers of noodles and 'babiyo' was exctiting.

Read a
passage in front of the class for the marks? Listen to the tape and answer the
questions? This is new for the students here.
Something strongly tells me this won’t
last very long in the school. Most of the teachers find it tedious and useless. But,
even if a single teacher finds it useful or fun for him/herself and the students, I would be delighted. I
would feel proud I was part of this change.J
